Our day in Flåm was one of the most memorable experiences of our Viking Cruises voyage through Norway. From towering mountains and grazing goats to the breathtaking Flåm Railway, this tiny fjord village delivered more beauty than we ever imagined.
When I think back on our trip through Norway, one day stands out above all the others: our visit to Flåm.
Tucked deep within the Aurlandsfjord, Flåm is a tiny village with a population of only a few hundred people. Despite its small size, it welcomes travelers from around the world who come to experience one of the most spectacular rail journeys on earth, the Flåm Railway.
And after experiencing it for ourselves, I can confidently say this was one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.
Arriving in Flåm by Cruise Ship
We arrived aboard the Viking Vela, anchored in the calm waters of the fjord and surrounded by towering mountains streaked with snow.
The scene felt almost unreal.
Waterfalls tumbled down steep cliffs, colorful houses dotted the shoreline, and low clouds drifted around the mountain peaks. Even before stepping ashore, I knew this day would be special.
A Tiny Village with Enormous Beauty
Flåm is small enough to explore on foot, but every direction offers a postcard-worthy view.
We wandered past charming red cottages perched on the water, a picturesque black church, grazing goats, and rushing streams fed by melting snow.
One of my favorite moments was spotting a small wooden sign labeled “Perabekken.” It was such a simple detail, but it perfectly captured the quiet, storybook feel of this remarkable place.
The Flåm Railway Experience
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly riding the Flåm Railway, known locally as Flåmsbana.
This extraordinary train climbs from sea level in Flåm to the mountain station of Myrdal, covering just over 12 miles while ascending nearly 2,900 feet.
That is an astonishing engineering feat.
The train itself felt wonderfully nostalgic, with polished wood ceilings, rich red seats, and oversized windows designed to showcase the scenery.
From the moment we departed, every turn revealed another jaw-dropping view.
Waterfalls, Mountains, and Hairpin Roads
The landscape changed constantly.
We passed frozen waterfalls cascading down rugged cliffs.
We crossed rivers with water so clear they looked almost unreal.
We saw dramatic switchback roads carved into the mountainside.
We spotted small farms tucked into impossibly steep terrain.
At one point, the train slowed to reveal a stunning waterfall plunging into an emerald pool below. A few minutes later, we were looking down at grazing goats and tiny cottages nestled in the valley.
It was impossible to put the camera down.
Standing at Myrdal in the Snow
At Myrdal, we stepped off the train into a winter wonderland.
Snow covered the ground and mountains in every direction. The air was crisp, cold, and invigorating. Even with the wind whipping around us, we couldn’t stop smiling.
This was one of those rare travel moments when you pause and think, “I cannot believe I am actually here.”
Returning to Flåm
Back in Flåm, we spent more time soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.
From the shoreline, we looked back across the water at our ship framed by snow-dusted peaks. It was one of those scenes that no photograph can fully capture, though I certainly tried.
We also met a lovely local artisan and purchased a handmade ornament that will always remind us of this extraordinary day.
